Shad is an understory shrub that flowers in spring. The largest examples on earth are here where there was no overlying canopy, which has alowed these bushes to grow into trees. They bloom for a mere week....and this was the week. There are 365 fresh water ponds on the island, which help to create a welcome stop over for migrating birds.
Rodman's Hollow. This is now protected by the Nature Conservancy. It is an unique geological feature caused by glaciation. Scott Comings of the Block Island Banding Station, retrieves a yellow warbler from a special net that doesn't damage the birds. The warbler will be banded and released after all the necessary data is recorded. Jamieson ? helps and holds the bags used to transport the birds to the weighing and banding station.
